Like   a   Doll

By Sowmya

"You looked like a doll the day you were born,
With velvet eyes like that of a fawn,
With rosy lips pink as petals of a rose,
I loved you the minute I held you close."

And so said her mother feeding her rice,
And so swallowed she. The rice and the lies.
A doll of a child; petted and patted; china limbs
That walked and talked; at her owners' whims.
Powdered and prettied; in frocks of lace,
A happy doll. Why then did her heart race.

Every Night
In the cigarette light?
You are my little doll, so crooned he,
As he played adult games with the toy on his knee.
For nights that never seemed to end,
She mutely screamed- dolls don't defendor offend.

Her mother cried when her rosy lips spoke,
Hugging her hard, wishing her to choke.
"Hush" she said. "Shh" she said. "Hush, my doll".
And That- Was All.
The doll existed, a long shelf life,
Finally, a wedding game and she became wife.
Her rosy lips parted, a frozen smile at call,
But her velvet eyes stayed blank. Like a Doll.
